******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

Britpop, or British Pop, music is a sub-classification of the now widely-popular alternative rock genre. Britpop, as the term suggests, started in the United Kingdom and it did at a time when the British indie music scene flourished around the beginning of the 1990s.

Inspired by decade-old British guitar pop music (particularly glam rock, British invasion, and punk rock), then-startup bands Blur and Suede spearheaded Britpop at a time when American grunge bands were winning the hearts of music fans throughout the United Kingdom. Shortly thereafter, other bands joined in, like Sleeper, The Verve, Supergrass, Space, Oasis, Cast, Pulp, and Elastica. These bands largely manifested the influence of and deference for old British pop music and juxtaposed it with songs that address exclusively-British affairs and themes.

Most agree that Britpop started in the early 1990s, but journalist John Harris took it a step further by suggesting that Britpop started when Blur and Suede each released their singles (“Popscene” and “The Drowners”, respectively) at approximately the same period around the spring of 1992. Harris opined, “[I]f Britpop started anywhere, it was the deluge of acclaim that greeted Suede's first records: all of them audacious, successful and very, very British."
