The technique of creating fabrics using decorative knots is called macramé. Macramé is a word of French origin that means knot, and that in turn derives from the Turkish word makrama. This has its origin in the Persian word mikrama with the same meaning.
It is a very old art, in which only hands are used to execute it. Peoples like the Persians and the Assyrians had great mastery. Later, the Arabs took him to Europe and later the Europeans to America. The typical hammocks of Caribbean knots were made with this technique.
The macramé has three basic knots: the half knot, flat knot (or square), cote knot (festoon or cavandoli). From these knots can make more than 50 different variations.
The materials needed to do a macramé work are the yarn (either cotton, jute, linen, silk or other natural fibers) and a surface on which to hold the work (usually, a wooden bar). Any thread of strong consistency is suitable for macrame work, however the choice of it is determined by the work to be done. The most commonly used yarns are cotton or silk.
