******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************
Jazz fusion, jazz-rock, fusion jazz, or simply, fusion, are all modifications of a musical fusion genre which was cultivated from mixing R&B and funk rhythms and complex time signatures derived from non-Western music, the electronic effects and expansion of rock music, as well as extended, mostly instrumental compositions with a jazz style to lengthy group improvisations. Fusion jazz music was developed around the latter part of the 1960s and typically used brass and wind and displayed a higher level of instrumental technique.
Fusion jazz became a hit during the 1970s. A decade after, fusion bolstered its experimental and improvisatory approaches throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It was not uncommon to find albums of fusion groups to include a medley of musical styles, hence Fusion can also be regarded as a musical approach or tradition.
Jazz-rock fusion boasts of technically challenging bass solos, guitar solos as well as syncopated and odd-metered drumming, and these have been assimilated by the technically-focused progressive metal music genre back in the initial part of the 1990s. Progressive rock has an inclination toward long solos, complex music, non-standard time signatures, diverse influences and changing line-ups which were comparable to Jazz fusion. Ozric Tentacles, Gong, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer are just some of the striking examples of progressive rock musicians who combined Jazz fusion elements to their music.
